Limestone, tea tree and the 1940 fire
A soil pit on the red limestone rise at the football ground found sandy clay loam over medium clay, then weathering limestone and marl from 70 cm. Agriculture Victoria notes that limestone can restrict root movement where it sits near the surface, so on a rise like that it is worth knowing what is underneath before a new tree goes in where an old one came out.
Large coastal tea tree dominates the south eastern part of Grasstree Park Nature Reserve opposite Bunnings. Surf Coast Shire says the shrub, while native to Australia, does not occur naturally around Torquay, and the council is taking it out of the reserve, partly with a mulcher, to restore the native heathland.
Half the Torquay township was burned out in 1940 by a fire that started at Moriac.

Can the pines on the Esplanade be trimmed?
Not by a private contractor. The line of Norfolk Island pines near the foreshore is public, and the Surf Coast Shire heritage study counts it among the visual qualities of Front Beach, so work on those trees is for the land manager. A quote for your own trees beside them will say how the pines are protected.
Can the tea tree in my garden come out?
It depends on the planning controls on the property, which differ across the Surf Coast, and that is checked before it is quoted, as it is for any tree. The council clearing tea tree from its own reserve does not settle what can happen in a garden.
