Tree work in Lara

Heavy clay, creek flats and the 1969 fire

A soil survey pit at Lara, on basalt, is a red vertosol, a cracking clay with a high clay content all the way down. Clay like that shrinks and swells as it dries and wets, so a big tree close to a house can add to movement in footings and paths, and taking one out can let the ground swell back as the moisture returns.

In 2013, a council report on the Manzeene Avenue land stated that it, and all land in the lower reaches of Hovells Creek where it joins Serendip Creek, has a propensity to flood or be inundated. Flat ground like that stays soft after rain, so an elevated platform, a stump grinder or a chipper truck may need mats down or a tracked machine to get to the tree.

In January 1969 a fire that started on the fringe of the You Yangs hit Lara and Little River, and 43 homes in Lara were destroyed.

How it works

From the first call to a clear garden

Nothing happens without a written quote you have agreed to.

  1. Tell us about the tree

Call or send the form with the tree and what is worrying you.

  2. A contractor comes to see it

A local tree contractor looks at the tree, the access and whatever sits underneath it, because a quote off a photo misses the things that change the job.

  3. A written quote

The quote sets out the scope, what happens to the timber and the stump, and the date. It is the contractor's quote, and nothing starts until you accept it.

  4. The work and the clean up

On the day the tree is dealt with as quoted, the green waste leaves on the truck and the lawn is raked.

Lara questions

The Walkers Road avenue and wet ground

Can the memorial trees be cut back?

Not as a private job. Heritage Overlay HO1984 covers the Walkers Road Avenue of Honour, which runs along Walkers Road and the southern boundary of the Lara Recreation Reserve. Its 84 trees were planted in 1948, and the heritage record notes they are showing signs of senescence. Pruning them is a request to the council, and what can be quoted is work on your own trees beside them.

Why does the weather matter for a stump job?

The soil survey at Lara notes that running machinery over cracking clay when it is wet compacts and smears it, so a wet week can push a stump job back until the lawn firms up.
