A heritage precinct on a steep hill
Heritage Overlay HO2006, the Newtown West Heritage Precinct, takes in the north side of Aphrasia Street, both sides of Stephen Street, the south side of Nantes Street and Formosa Street, between Shannon Avenue and Ruthven Street. Before a removal or heavy pruning there is quoted, the heritage overlay schedule is checked for tree controls, and where they apply, a planning application adds weeks before the job can be booked.
Formosa Street still serves its original purpose as a vehicular access lane for some Nantes and Stephen Street properties, which can let a chipper or trailer reach a back yard without the brush being carried through the house. Out the front, Aphrasia Street has concrete footpaths and no nature strips, and the south side of Stephen Street and both sides of Nantes Street have none either, so there is no verge to stack the timber on.
Behind the houses on the north side of Stephen Street, the biggest private gardens are open grassed areas punctuated by trees, mainly eucalypts, dating from the 20th century, on steeply sloping ground. The garages sit on or near the Stephen Street boundary, uphill of those yards, so anything cut has to come back up the slope to reach the street.

It can. The Algerian Oak in Mont Street, classified by the National Trust at State level in 2023, has a canopy spreading to 25 m, so pruning, trenching or removals on the lots around it are planned around a crown and a root zone that size. The listing is not a planning control on its own.
