Does grinding get rid of the roots?
It takes out the stump and the roots right under it. The rest stay in the ground and break down over time.
Can a new tree go in the same spot?
It can, once the stump is ground deeper and the grindings are dug out and replaced with soil, although a spot a little to one side is often easier because the old roots are not in the way.
Is it better to leave the stump?
Sometimes. A stump in a garden bed can be left to break down, and some people keep one as a seat or a stand for a pot. In a lawn it usually just gets in the way of the mower.
